Asia Company’s Land Korea as island 1788 rare Italian hand colored miniature map
Brian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints

Asia. secondo ultime osservazioni dell'Accademia Reale delle Science.
Issued c.1788, Italy. Rare Italian engraved variant of a map first produced 100 years prior. Comparison of this map to one first done by Macquart in the 1680’s will instantly reveal the nearly untouched continuation of the geography and the plate. Far easier to copy than to invent, plus the reader would have had no way to verify anything he was looking at anyway.
Charming and very scarce eighteenth century engraved miniature map with lovely full hand color.
Original fold lines as issued.
Korea is clearly shown as an island, cut off from the continent by rivers. Charming elongational shapes assigned to everything due to the projection used and the era of production. Almost folk-art simple geography, including the five mythical rivers dividing Thailand flowing from a huge lake far north.
Perhaps best of all, the apocryphal Pacific island of “Company’s Land” is shown with an unknown coastline. The rendering strongly hints at unknown geography and implies the mystery of what lies beyond it.
Overall clean and attractive example, light age staining (mostly in blank margins), any age flaws are minor and don't detract visually.
Map still displays well and looks great.
Delightful little map.
