Kingdom of Italy Sardinia Naples Tuscany 1864 Johnson & Ward civil war era map
Brian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & PrintsJohnson's Northern Italy & Johnson's Southern Italy.
(Europe,. Italy, Lombardy, Venice, Sardinia, Tuscany, Kingdom of Naples, Sicily, Malta).
Issued 1864, New York by Johnson & Ward.
Large civil war era mid 19th century lithographed map with original hand color.
A decorative scrolled border adds to the visual appeal of the map. These borders changed over time and help to identify different states and issues of Johnson maps, which makes them an interesting area to collect.
Note the very strange and almost unique dissection of the country across the top and bottom. The publisher has actually taken two earlier published separate maps and rather than re-engrave them into a new version, removed the borders of both and joined them, resulting in what is seen here. Oddly appealing visually, inset of Malta lower left.
Nice looking example, pleasing age patina, light soiling and small scattered spotting, short closed split at left side centerfold, any minor age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Original center fold as issued.
Sheet Measures c. 18" H x 26 1/2" W.
