The Hepatica or Spring Flowers.
Publ. 1848, Cincinnati byJ. Ernst.
Botanical (floral- flowers) themed juvenile, didactic instructional chap book format.
Well illustrated with wood cuts, some full page.
Rare mid 19th century juvenile chapbook with a Western frontier imprint. This western imprint location for this date is unusual and of note, and every survival is inherently scarce because of this.
Heavily worn example, as might be expected. Has the potential to be nearly unique. Last leaf mostly missing, rear soccer defective, front cover with edge splits and split lower joint.
Interesting condition indicating much viewing, likely original owners name hand inscribed on Presentstion leaf.
Otherwise remains mostly sound.
Exactly how you’d expect a small paper juvenile chap book from the first half of the 19th century to look.
62 (of 64) pp. plus both original printed wrappers with woodcuts in total. (rear wrapper with loss of bottom 1/3).
Clearly heavily worn condition, various flaws & scattered small stains, etc.
Scarce/rare in any condition.
Measures c. 4 3/4” x 3 5/8”.
