White Plains New York Jazz era Souvenir Book 1927 splendid Photo town history
Brian DiMambro(Old Books, Early 20th Century Books, Americana, United States, New York, White Plains, Souvenir Albums, Illustrated Books, Architectural Views, Town History).
White Plains in Pictures.
Published 1927, White Plains, New York by The Daily Reporter.
94 pages. Text in English.
Profusely illustrated throughout.
Poor physical condition, covers detached and well edge chipped, 3 leaves detached with edge damage(two at front, one at rear-see pics), otherwise clean and nice internally.
A visual treat, a great collection of houses and buildings including interior views. Numerous local banks are featured with 1 page photo essays, often showing lobbies and interior views now long vanished. Of potential interest to bank note collectors.
Rare large and inherently fragile folio production in any condition- essentially a limited edition, high quality oversize photo essay magazine tribute to this attractive New York enclave and it's fine architecture. No doubt expensive when produced and offered for sale to an inherently wealthy clientele. Hundreds of photographs of beautiful houses, manicured garden grounds, urban buildings, various interesting interiors, etc. A rich architectural snapshot produced at the height of the Jazz era in the early 20th century, just before the great Stock Market Crash of 1929.
A splendid photographic printing production, a wonderful comprehensive photo survey of the town's endless attractive luxury homes and urban buildings.
All images nicely printed in brownish-sepia ink on heavy cream-colored coated photo paper stock. A soft clear visual warmth unique to this type of rare printing press, paper and era which is impossible to duplicate exactly today. Much nicer on the eye than screen digital photos, this type of printing is why most antiquarian paper possess qualities impossible to fully capture digitally. In person this is much more pleasing than it looks on a screen, owning this book as the actual physical object is very different from owning it as a collection of digital images.
Publisher's card stock wrappers (both detached and edge chipped), embossed gilt title lettering, original decorative binding string.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.
Binding gently age worn, mostly light or inoffensive signs of handling and time but nothing severe or unsightly, book remains overall attractive as an object.
Paper is gently toned, still clean, tight, sound internally (aside from the detached leaves mentioned above).
Still attractive on the shelf. The book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in overall nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws which may be present seem easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail showing how this scarce book survives. Flaws seen and/ or described have been taken into account.
Book Measures c. 16 1/2" H x 11" W. Folio size, surprisingly heavy.
