Boston MASS city plan 1883 Hotel promo large pocket map w/Amusements Insane Jail

New Map of Boston giving all the points of interest; with every railway & steamboat terminus, prominent hotels, theatres & public buildings.

Large detailed color lithographed city plan.

Issued 1883, Boston by GH Walker & Tilly Haynes (proprietor of the hotel).

Gold ink lithographed paste on coated stock covers on boards, cloth spine, rear cover with fine tiny view.

Scarce.

Given away (likely only) as a promotional map for guests staying at the United states hotel company, one of the three major hotels featured at the top of the extensive printed map key as being the only places to stay within the city (kindly inform me if you know or believe otherwise).

Likely commissioned by these 3 hotels of Walker (who specialized in this sort of large folded color lithographed pocket map variant printing) for their guests, thus almost certainly not sold on newsstands.

Seems possible (likely?) there are other variant issues of this map with one of these other hotels being gilt stamped on the cover.

An extensive key in three columns lists �Places of Amusement�, Noteworthy institutions including a World�s Fair building, many steamer lines within the harbor, along the coast and down to New York.

Only three hotels are listed in the key, each being highlighted on the plan. The insane hospital is shown with three buildings abutting the House of Corrections in South Boston along the harbor front.

Great map for inclusion in a future specialized American city plan pocket map cartobibliography.

Map is clean and remains worthy of display, various small signs of aging, short splits at fold line intersections, light wrinkling, etc. Not new, but not poor or defective. Fairly nice overall, map is loose within the card stock covers.

Sheet Measures c. 19 1/2" H x 20�W.

Card stock gilt lithographed covers measure 7" H x 4 1/2" W.
