A Map of Massachusetts from the Best Authorities by J. Denison.

Issued 1796, Boston by Thomas & Andrew’s for Morse. Map by J. Denison, engraved by Samuel Hill.

Original antique copper engraved 18th century map, beautiful hand color. Of note for being an early American cartographic production.

Under the mileage distance scale is engraved in the ocean area "The Surveys of the Eastern counties could not be obtained seasonably to complete this map". Small inset lower left shows Berkshire and Hampshire Counties. Note the utterly fascinating shape assigned to Martha's Vineyard.

Overall clean condition. Entire top blank margin extended with old paper, some loss of the imprint lettering above the neat line. Both fold lines nicely backed with rice paper/ thin archival tape as is one short side edge tear at middle left (almost invisible to the eye when viewing the map).

Sheet measures c. 8 1/8" H x 10 1/4" W. Original fold lines.
