Rare large folding linen backed map in 14 panels, affixed to card stock covers as issued.

With two associated documents loosely laid in; first a manuscript receipt on heavy card stock dated 1887 for the purchase of the map (along with 3 other Canal items) and a manuscript signed Paris 1889 Society of Engineers President's letter acknowledging receipt of this very copy into the society's library in Paris! And here it is today, currently in Dover, NH. Remarkable and fascinating.

Issued by a French engineering firm for what was likely a relatively small, limited commercial distribution, perhaps soliciting interest in the business enterprise or for those who wanted to speculate in land and minerals to do so more effectively, etc. The map would have been quite expensive when offered and the band of interest in it would have been specialized and narrow. Seems likely any example would be scarce today. Perhaps the Trump administration would like to use it in their upcoming reclaim-ment of the Canal? And it's in French, so he could get the French involved as well? Is that how it works?

Somewhat worn, covers with creases and corner chipping, map displays mostly small and minor scattered staining and spotting, various light signs of age, but mostly clean, sound; entirely respectable and collectable condition.
