(Old Maps, 19th Century Maps, North America, United States, New England, Massachusetts, Boston, Bowdoin Square, Revere House, Street Scene, Architectural View).
Issued c. 1840-50's, Boston (?). Engraved by G. G. Smith. Drawn by H. Billings.
Scarce mid 19th Century engraved urban view print, found here with very artistic and attractive hand color. A superior visual example, close to unique, plus with a pleasing age patina as well. Crease at top left corner across blank margin area.
Rare print which has printed on the back advertising from Grover & Baker's Sewing machine manufacturing facility, located 208 Broadway NYC and 71 Milk Street, Boston.
Fascinating and rather unique commercial advertising connection between a Boston company and an engraved view within that same city. There are very few 19th century American engraved views which display advertising on the reverse. Separately printed advertising is seen more often on maps, although it is quite uncommon there as well. All examples should be considered scarce and worthy of consideration.
An almost astonishing level of street activity is well rendered in miniature. Over 2 dozen distinct discernable figures with just a few inches, not including five horses and countless windows, many with shaded curtains (!). The skill and patience required to engrave at this level of miniature is extraordinary, the finished print a marvel of superior hand-eye skill, clearly displayed here like few others ever equaled or exceeded.
Perfect example for gift giving.
