Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization.

Issued January 9th, 1864, New York, by Harper & Brothers.

An actual piece of American history issued during the Civil War. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images relating to that war and issued contemporary to the events.

Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper.  An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue.

During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era.

Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued.

Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Centerfold has a 2" split at bottom (no loss, mendable), some short edge splits. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display. 

Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W.

Periodical will be shipped gently rolled in a sturdy 3" wide tube to ensure it arrives safely to you! Multiple issues purchased at the same time will be shipped flat.

Most of the front page is a print: "Longstreet's Sharpshooters Firing On A Federal Supply Train" with some text on it as well. Also ftpg. text on: "The Siege of Charleston". Pages 2 and 3 have much reporting on the Civil War including "Our Men At Richmond" "Soldier's Pay" "First In the Field" "The New Year" "Army & Navy Items" and more. Prints include a full page: "Headquarters of General Thomas--the Captured Cannon" and half pages: "Charge of Colonel Creighton's Brigade at the Battle of Ringgold" & "Fort Saunders Assaulted by a Portion of Longstreet's Corps" with text on both Ringgold and Fort Saunders as well.

The double page centerfold is a very dramatic print: "The Rebel Assault on Fort Sunders--The Fight In The Ditch". Other prints within include; "Interior of Fort Sumter after the Bombardment from Morris Island" "Bursting of a Shell in the Streets of Charleston, South Carolina" and 3 prints of: "The Great Western Sanitary Fair at Cincinnati, Ohio". The back page has a cartoon: "Unavoidably Postponed".
