Issued June 5th, 1861, New York, by Harper & Brothers. 16 pp. Nice double page birds-eye pictorial map view of "The Seat of War" showing Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and North Carolina.
An actual piece of American history issued during the Civil War. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images relating to that war and issued contemporary to the events.
Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper. An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue.
During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era.
Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose, several short minor closed bottom edge splits (archival tape). Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued.
Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display.
Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W.

Also in this issue is a Winslow Homer print titled: "The Advance Guard of the Grand Army of U.S. Crossing the Long Bridge over the Potomac at 2 a.m. on May 24, 1861", prints of: "The Late Colonel Ellsworth" "Corporal Francis E. Brownell, Ellsworth Zouaves"; a small print of: "Bollman's Rock, Point of Rocks, Harper's Ferry, Thrown Down by the Rebels to Obstruct the Railroad Track".
Also a full page: "Ellsworth's Zouaves" which includes 4 scenes; "General Caldwader's Camp of United States Volunteers at Locust Point, Opposite Baltimore, Maryland".
There is also a very expansive double page centerfold showing a: "Pictorial Map of the Seat of War, Showing Parts of the States of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and North Carolina & Also the Coast Line from Cape Henry to Fort Pickens, with the United States Blockading Fleet."
