The Austrian Semmerings mountain village route represented a European railroad engineering feat previously unequaled anywhere else in the world under such challenging conditions. (see wiki Semmering Railway).

This fragile item is among the very first pocket souvenirs issued almost immediately after the railway line was finished and opened in 1854. It quickly became a significant site for scenic tourists, all originating on rail from Vienna. Indeed, it is clearly a local publishing response to a then new market demand by tourists seeking visual souvenirs of the spectacular scenic views along the route.
