(Old Boos, 18th century books, Morse's Gazetteer, Americana, Early American Books, Leather Books).
The American Gazetteer, ...Forts, Indian Tribes & New Discoveries on the American Continent, also West India Islands...commerce, manufacturing, curiosities...A particular Description of the Georgia Western Territory... by Jedidiah Morse.
Published 1797, Boston by S. Hall and Thomas & Andrews.
c. 600 pages. Text in English. One map of South America is present, then only portions of other folding maps (some maps lacking).
Period full leather binding, smooth spine, gilt bands, gilt title lettering on contrasting black leather label.
Item is physically old and shows clear heavy signs of handling and time. Item is not new or in "new" condition by any measure- see pics.
Binding heavily age worn, yet still remains overall attractive as an object in a noble way. An 18th century American object created and made entirely by hand and hand operated press. This includes hand-made paper, and binding, etc.
Rear cover detached. Front joint cracked but still strongly attached.
Despite the physical condition, great content, a fascinating glimpse into America during the foundation era of our modern society. A section at the end discusses in detail the Claims the U.S. Government had on the Georgia Western Territory. Also tables of post office letter rates, etc.
Text block paper is heavily toned, spotted and with many small neat very early hand corrections.
Still attractive on the shelf. Item displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this antique item survives.
Book Measures c. 8 5/8" H x 6 1/2" W.
