The American Gazetteer, by Jedidiah Morse.
Published 1797, Boston by S. Hall and Thomas & Andrews.
c. 600 pages. Text in English. Includes 7 folding maps, complete as issued. Maps are North America, South America, Georgia Territory, Northern U.S., Southern U.S., Pacific New Discoveries with New Holland, and West Indies (Caribbean).
Rare early American geography book, complete with 7 American-engraved maps.
Period full leather binding, smooth spine, gilt bands, gilt title lettering on contrasting red leather label.
Book is physically old and shows some clear heavy signs of handling and time.
Leather binding age worn, leather rubbed, well scuffed with loss of surface, but still supple, joints scuffed, covers weakened but still firmly attached, remains overall attractive as an 18th century American book.
Text block paper is well toned, light to moderate scattered age spotting, maps are heavily toned with some offsetting, internally still well preserved, tight, sound.
Book displays a unique age patina, given the rarity and desirability of the work, any age flaws relatively easy to overlook or forgive.
