A Journal of the Travels and Sufferings of Daniel Saunders, Jun.
Published 1794, Salem, Massachusetts by Thomas C. Cushing.
128 pages plus 15 page appendix. Text in English. Published in the city the author was from. Appears to be the first American edition.

The book is an account of the hardships involved after a ship wreck off the coast of Arabia. The final paragraph mentions a crew member who was a "black man" who did not make it back and was likely taken as a slave. After the end, final 15 pages are an appendix describing Arabia.

Attractive antiquarian full leather binding, smooth spine, embossed bands, gilt title lettering on contrasting red leather label, embossed ruled covers.

In a curious and fascinating early binding, the leather cover is actually a second layer of leather over the book itself. The spine title label is revealed through a cut-out in the covering, which is ruled in outline. The endpapers are very early and appear to bear a very early owners name, indicating the book was covered perhaps 200 years ago.

Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time.

Binding gently age worn but still appealing, leather and joints slightly scuffed but still supple, remains overall very attractive as an object.

Text block paper is uniformly well age toned as typical, various scattered small stains and worm holes to text block paper. A book which has been taken care of but well read, does not look like new.

A rare 18th century American travel book in any condition.

Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this book as it survives.

We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than it appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take clear photos and try to describe it clearly.
