(Old Books, 18th Century Books, Science, Medicine, Necrosis, Bone Disease, Illustrated Books, Leather Books).
A Practical Essay of a Certain Disease of the Bones, Termed Necrosis, by James Russell.
Published 1794, Edinburgh by Neill and Co.
209 pages. Text in English. Illustrated with 6 engraved plates, complete as called for.
Garrison-Morton 4307: "One of the first attempts at a complete and detailed description of necrosis."
Entirely unsophisticated and original 18th century full leather binding, smooth spine, gilt bands, gilt title lettering on red leather label. Binding is now heavily rubbed, edge scuffed and worn, front cover is detached.
Book is over 225 years old and shows some clear signs of handling and time.
Binding survives as issued but leather has dried, book is physically age worn, leather rubbed but still supple, front cover detached, remains overall attractive as an object. A worthy candidate for front cover re-attachment at a binder's.
Text block paper is typically age toned, plates display light to moderate scattered age spotting, internally still well preserved, tight, square, sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
