(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Travel, Tourism, Russian Books, Caucasus, Illustrated Books).
Guide to the Caucasus.
Published 1888, Tiflis [Tbilisi] Georgia, Russian Empire by the Typography Office of the Chief Citizen.
434 pages. Text in Russian. Illustrated with 12 plates, lacks the road map mentioned on the title page.
Rare 19th century Russian guide book in any condition.
Antiquarian 1/2 leather binding. smooth spine, embossed bands, marbled covers.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Covers loosened from text block.
Binding heavily age worn but still appealing, boards apparently replaced long ago since they do not correctly fit the text block (!), leather and joints dried, scuffed and rubbed but still supple, remains overall interesting and appealing as an object.
Text block paper is gently age toned as typical, shaken, some pages or signatures loosened, frontis detached and edge chipped, clearly much handled.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this book as it survives.
We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than they appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it openly and honestly.
