China 1920 Shanghai Chinese book lacquer post card album hand painted pagesBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
- Oblong Chinese post card album
- Originally purchased Shanghai, China, 1920, so likely made slightly before / around that date. (original owner noted date inside base of front cover- see pic)
Covers are lacquered wooden boards hand painted in colors, the faces & hands of the figures raised in relief and intricately carved (incised) and also painted as well. Appears to be a peaceful relaxing fishing idle time in a small row boat, standing oarsman, woman with fishing rod, landscape scene with volcanic mountain in distance.
Every page is made from wood and outlined in patterned fabric. Hand painted silk paintings cover every board surface, hand threaded fine string in all corners for loosely inserting post cards. Contains 9 double sided boards, each holding 4 cards, and two boards being front & rear covers, each with silk painting on inside and lacquered boards on outside (so album holds 72 cards total). Front cover displays scene, rear board is blank.
Some board pages are of course now detached, since the weight of the boards over time would certainly be too much for the weak the simple black cloth binding style originally used.
Nice looking antique book but one which was issued with a fragile binding and which has suffered some effects of time. Shows clear signs of usage and age, some small edge & corner chipping, small nicks or stain spots in a few scattered places, woman's face soiled (likely removable), but as the pictures show, still a noble and handsome looking old book.
Period oblong binding, spine gilt ruled & lettered, compartment devices.
Measures c. 10 7/8" H x 14" W x 2 3/8" thick.
