De La Generation de L'Homme ou Tableu De L'Amour Conjugal, by Nicolas Venette.
Published 1696, Cologne, Germany by Claude Joly.
672 pages plus index. Text in French. Illustrated with 10 engraved plates (several folding), portrait frontis bound after preface and table of contents.

Considered to be among the first (if not the first) work devoted to sexual advice for couples.

Attractive antiquarian full leather binding, raised bands, gilt title lettering & compartment decorations.

Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time.

Binding well age worn but still appealing, leather and joints dried, flaked and chipped, but still supple, covers remain well attached, remains overall attractive as a 17th century object.

Text block paper is age toned as typical, internally book remains mostly clean, tight and sound. A book which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.

Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this book as it survives.

"Discussing four sub-topics with respect to sex: anatomy, reproduction, desire, and impotence/infertility, Venette reviews ancient and medieval authors, with commentary. The resulting work has an ambiguous mixture of seriousness and light-heartedness bordering upon erotic literature". (thanks to Sequiter Books).

We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than they appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it openly and honestly.
