Darby's Universal Gazetteer Geographical Dictionary 1827 book w/ Tanner U.S. map
Brian DiMambro(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Geography, Gazetteer, Books with Maps).
Darby's Universal Gazetteer, or a New Geographical Dictionary Containing a Description of the Empires, Kingdoms, States, Provinces, Cities, Towns, Forts, Seas, Harbours, Rivers, Lakes, Mountains, Capes, &c in the Known World, with the Government, Customs, and Manners of the Inhabitants... by William Darby.
Published 1827, Philadelphia by Bennett & Walton.
892 pages. Text in English. Large hand colored folding territorial U.S. map at front by Henry Tanner (map has the typical 3" inset tear seen on most surviving examples but is otherwise clean and very well preserved).
Attractive antiquarian full leather binding, slightly raised bands, gilt title lettering.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Darby was an early American cartographic pioneer and a quick search will show his historical significance.
Binding well age worn but still appealing, spine leather dried, surface crackled and chipped, front cover detached, boards scuffed and rubbed, remains overall attractive as a physical object of this era.
Text block paper is age toned as typical, internally book remains mostly clean, tight and sound. A book which has been taken care of but does not look like a new book. This is an antique old book which has been handled over the past many decades.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a unique age patina, the various age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for our detailed attempt to present this book as it actually survives. There is no attempt to hide anything but it's virtually impossible to list every single last tiny flaw or minor (normal) age defect which may exist
We often over-describe relatively normal or minor flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than they appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it openly and honestly. We accept returns, so we're on your side in any transaction. Thank you for being reasonable, if you have any doubts about condition or have very high expectations/ needs for super-fine, we advise you to not purchase the item so as to avoid disappointment.
