Brian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Periodicals, Democratic Review, Crimean War, Illustrated Books, Books with Maps, Cannibalism).
Democratic Review, Volume XXXI. (bound with) Vol. XXXII. & Vol. XXXIII.
Published 1852, New York by the Office of the Democratic Review.
628 pages. Text in English. Engraved frontis portrait protected by original tissue guard, several other engraved portraits, wood engraved maps plus a large folding map (now detached and loose from volume). Series of maps of the Black Sea and Hungary. Large folding map with short 3" repaired tear.
Essentially a run of this periodical, scarce thus. Fascinating contents which seem to include humor. as well as military reporting, with much on the war in Hungary.
Period 1/2 leather binding, smooth spine, gilt bands & title lettering.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.
Binding age worn, leather scuffed, chipped and rubbed but still supple, joints cracked, covers loosely held, some old damp staining, remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, light to moderate scattered age spotting with old damp staining, internally still tight and sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
