Blaeksprutten. 1895-1904 compilation.
Published annually, Copenhagen by Ernst Bojesens.
10 issues, each c. 45 pages. Text in Danish. Profusely illustrated throughout with approaching 175 full page color lithographs and countless hundreds of b&w illustrations.
The color plates are typically of a satirical nature and their wonderful art nouveau visual aesthetics often transcends the language barrier presented by the Danish language for most people. Many of the images seem frameable as art, the specific historical content they convey now secondary to their modern visual appeal as works of early modern cartooning art.
Of the 10 annual issues, the first three years are without color covers, the remaining 7 issues have their typically splendid color cover.
Early 20th century 1/2 leather binding, smooth spine, gilt bands & title lettering, pseudo-snakeskin covers, oblong format. Issues included in this volume: 1895-1904.
Book is approaching 120 years old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.
Binding gently age worn, leather rubbed but still supple, joints scuffed, remains sound, tight and overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, internally still quite clean and well preserved.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
