The Discovery and Conquest of the New World.
Published 1892, Philadelphia & Chicago by H.J. Smith & Co.
857 pages. Text in English. Profusely illustrated throughout, including 11 lovely full page chromolithographed color plates (3 are double page) plus hundreds of small images, many full page and numerous maps. The contents index is very detailed.
Scarce monumental 19th century pictorial work on the colonial conquest of natives.
Publisher's decorative cloth binding, gilt title lettering, embossed pictorial spine & cover decorations.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.
Binding age worn, heavy text block a bit shaken away from the binding, joints slightly scuffed, inner hinges cracked with amateur old tape reinforcements, remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, light scattered age spotting, internally still clean and relatively well preserved.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this detailed comprehensive 19th century book survives.
