(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Book Bindings, Edgar Allan Poe, Biographies).
American Men of Letters: Edgar Allan Poe. Edited by George E. Woodberry.
Published 1885, Boston by Houghton Mifflin and Company.
350 pages. Text in English. Engraved frontis portrait protected by original tissue guard.
Period 1/2 leather binding, smooth spine, gilt title lettering and spine decorations, marbled covers and end papers.
Binding remains tight and sound, some scuffing and wear to leather, small chipping to spine ends, joints surface cracking but covers remain solidly attached. Interior hinges cracked, contents tight, text block displays a pleasing age patina, largely free of age spotting.
Book remains attractive on the shelf. It displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, the age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
While examples may be found in publishers cloth, period leather bindings like this are much scarcer.
