The Holy Bible.
Published c. 1816-23, Boston by Charles Ewer.
932 pages. Text in English. Engraved frontispiece and half-title, numerous full page copper engraved plates throughout. [As seen in some 19th century books, title page mentions maps but none found within nor any evidence of removal- likely never bound in].
Beautiful and uncommon acid-etched multi-colored leather binding, covers with patterned decorative gilt ruled border, slightly raised bands, gilt compartment decorations and title lettering, gilt ruled covers, marbled end papers. Some rubbing and cracking along front joint rendering cover slightly loosened (but still well attached), binding remains clean, tight, and sound.
Front hinge cracked, final Index leaf torn through, work appears to be complete. No doubt issued at different times with different plate placements and paginations.
Early owner's inscription: February 26th, 1853. Family History leaf is blank.
Book remains well preserved and very attractive on the shelf. It displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, the age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
