Felicia Hemans Collected Poetry 1836 lovely gilt decorative leather book bindingBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Poetry, Felicia Hemans, Decorative Book Bindings).
The Poetical Works of Mrs. Felicia Hemans: Complete in One Volume with a Critical Preface.
Published 1836, Philadelphia by Thomas T. Ash.
361 pages. Text in English. Engraved frontispiece.
Wonderful example of an American publishers gift binding of this early period.
Attractive antiquarian full grained morocco leather binding, smooth spine, gilt bands & compartment decorations, gilt title lettering, blind embossed & gilt ruled cover designs, all edges gilt, marbled end papers.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. With a Feb. 22, 1836 gift inscription to blank fly leaf.
Binding gently age worn but still appealing, leather and joints slightly scuffed and rubbed but still supple, remains overall very attractive as an object.
Text block paper is age toned as typical, moderate scattered foxing (which is often light), internally set remains mostly tight and sound. A book which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.
Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this book as it survives.
We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than it appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take clear photos and try to describe it clearly.
Book Measures c. 9 1/4" H x 6" W.
