(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Illustrated Books, Travel, Tourism, Italy).
The Tourist in France by Thomas Roscoe. Illustrated from Drawings, by J.D. Harding.
Published 1834, London by Jennings and Chaplin.
280 pages. Text in English. Engraved frontis and half title protected by original tissue guard. Illustrated throughout with 26 engraved plates total.
Attractive antiquarian full leather binding, smooth spine, gilt title lettering, embossed cover decorations, all edges gilt.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. With 1834 owners inscription to front free end paper, early custom engraved armorial book plate to paste down.
Binding gently age worn but still remarkably well preserved and very appealing, leather and joints slightly rubbed with tiny scuff spots but still supple, remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently age toned as typical, internally book remains mostly clean, tight and sound. Plates all remain spotless. A book which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this nice early 19th century plate book as it survives.
We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than it appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it clearly.
Book Measures c. 8" H x 5" W.
