(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Illustrated Books, Geography).
A System of Modern Geography, Comprising a Description of the Present State of the World, and Its Five Great Divisions: America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceanica, with Their Several Empires, Kingdoms, States, Territories, &c., by S. Augustus Mitchell.
Published 1841, Philadelphia by Thomas, Cowperthwait, & Co.
336 pages. Text in English. Illustrated throughout with charming almost folk-art like woodcuts. Wood engraved frontispiece.
Interesting text about the western regions of the U.S., including a separate titled entry describing the "Republic of Texas". This special Texas entry is short-lived and may not appear in many other editions.
Attractive antiquarian 1/4 leather binding, smooth spine, gilt bands & title lettering, paper cover boards.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Much nicer example than typical for this type of mid-19th century school geography book, most of which were used into poor condition.
Binding gently age worn but still appealing, leather and joints slightly rubbed but still supple, remains overall very attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently age toned as typical, internally book remains mostly clean, tight and sound. A book which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this book as it survives.
We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than it appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take clear photos and try to describe it clearly.
