George Eliot Lovely 12 volume leather set c. 1900 limited edition #57/100Brian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
(Old Books, Early 20th Century Books, Leather Books, Decorative Book Bindings, George Eliot, Literature).
Works of George Eliot.
Published c. 1900, London for Society of English Bibliophiles. Edition de Luxe.
12 volumes, each c.375 pages. Text in English. Frontispiece in each volume protected by original tissue guard, each volume with further illustrations.
Attractive antiquarian 1/2 leather bindings, raised bands, gilt compartment decorations & title lettering, marbled covers & end papers, top edges gilt.
Set is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Set is not complete, but each volume stands unto itself.
Bindings gently age worn but still appealing, leather and joints slightly rubbed with minor scuffs or staining, but leather remains supple, spines uniformly sunned to a mellow brown color (as often seen with green leather of this era), overall handsome on the shelf.
Note-This is not a complete set of the author's works, but a run of key titles- each title is complete in either one or multiple volumes, no stray odd volumes.
Text block paper is gently age toned as typical, internally set remains mostly clean, tight and sound. A set which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.
Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this attractive and fine set as it survives.
We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than they appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it openly and honestly.
Books Measure c. 7 1/2" H x 5" W.
