The History of America, by William Robertson.
Published 1803, London by A. Strahan.
4 volumes, each c. 425 pages. Text in English.

Illustrated with 4 large 1795 Kitchin engraved folding maps, including one focusing on New Spain / Mexico (Texas and the American Southwest), another nice large map of the Caribbean, one of continent of South America, a final map of the Isthmus and west coast of South America. These nice maps are not found in all versions of this work, this version among the nicer of the era. Also a large folding pictorial plate of Mexican hieroglyphics. The maps display only minor light offsetting which is easily erasable, maps which due to their folded nature are often found with heavy toning and heavy permanent offsetting.

Also, in this edition, this new supplemental material on Virginia and New England was added in 1796, making later editions more interesting on some levels than earlier ones.

Attractive antiquarian full diced pattern leather bindings, smooth spines, gilt bands, gilt title lettering, covers ruled in outline, (beautiful) marbled end papers. A lovely set in the original diced leather binding. .

Set is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time.

Bindings gently age worn but still appealing, all but one spine title label is lacking, leather and joints slightly rubbed but still supple, small chipping to spine ends, couple joints broken but all covers still well attached, set remains overall very attractive as an object.

Text block paper is gently age toned as typical, internally set remains mostly clean, tight and sound. A set which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.

Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this nice set as it survives.

We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than they appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it openly and honestly.
