(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Americana, Native Americans, Illustrated Books).
History of the Indians of North and South America, by Samuel Goodrich.
Published 1849, Boston by Rand and Mann.
320 pages. Text in English. Illustrated with a few charmingly primitive wood engraved images. Publisher's catalog at rear. Scarce Boston imprint.
Fascinating mid-19th century American juvenile describing the prevalent views held within America about native Americans, their history, and their "prospects". The length and level of discussion is quite fascinating, touching upon many aspects and details of the relationship between the U.S. government and the different tribes in different parts of the country.
Publisher's pictorial gilt decorative cloth binding, embossed cover designs include an American Eagle above a wreath with tiny busts of George Washington and set within a floral surround.
Item is physically old and shows signs of age, time and handling. Item is not new or in "new" condition.
Binding age worn, spine ends slightly chipped, tips and edges worn, but gilt remains bright, covers fresh, overall attractive. To our eyes, book looks nicer in person than it does on the screen with digital images which seem to accentuate the light wear.
Text block paper toned, some typical scattered spotting, staining or foxing which is never offensive.
Still attractive on the shelf. Item displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
