(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Almanacs, Advertising, Medicine, Patent Medicine).
Jayne's Medical Almanac and Guide to Health for the Year 1850.
Published 1850, Philadelphia, printed by Stavely & McCalla, cheap book and job printers.
48 pages. Text in English. Woodcuts within.
Early mid-Western merchants paper name label from P. Hane of Pleasantville, Ohio affixed onto rear cover contemporary with issue. An interesting and unusual mid-western location for an ephemeral promotional patent medicine item such as this, making this a unique, one-of-a kind survival.
Publisher's woodcut pictorial colored paper wrappers. Scarce early year for this company (1848 copyright appears on cover), attractive woodcut cover shows a domestic interior with old mother, her grown daughters and grand children.
This free promotional booklet is 170+ years old and shows some clear signs of handling and time. It was distributed free of charge in 1850 and apparently few examples survive in any condition, this one still fairly nice looking, especially given the essentially frontier town location it was originally given away in.
Binding gently age worn, edges creased or chipped, original top corner hanging string tie still in place, remains overall attractive as a mid-19th century paper almanac.
Text block paper is gently toned, light to moderate scattered age spotting or small flaws from browsing in the past, internally still sound and readable.
Still attractive on the shelf. Item displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, the age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
