Histoire de la Vie de Jesus-Christ, by de Ligny.
Published 1804, Paris by Crapelet.
2 volumes, 510, 534 pages. Text in French. Illustrated throughout with 75 engraved plates, one folding map titled "La Palestine" by P. de Ligny with Jerusalem inset, engraved by L. Aubert.
A celebrated and famous work, not to be confused with similar titles which are not this fine pictorial set.
Period French Napoleonic-era full polished calf leather bindings, smooth spines with gilt cathedral window ornamentation, letters, rules and compartment decorations, covers outline ruled in gilt set within embossed floral running pattern set within rules, board edges gilt, marbled end papers.
Set is over 200 years old and shows some signs of handling and time. Set is not new or in "new" condition.
Early 18th century bindings gently age worn, leather slightly rubbed with minor surface scratching, but still supple, joints slightly scuffed with a couple minor short splits (all covers firmly and strongly attached as issued), set remains overall very well preserved, nicer than typical, very attractive as books of this era.
Text block paper is gently toned, light inoffensive scattered age spotting, perhaps some minor stains, couple minor hand notations to text, internally still well preserved, tight, sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this lovely early 19th century set survives.
