Johnson's Cyclopedia & Atlas 1899 monumental 8 vol. illustrated leather setBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Decorative Leather Sets, Johnson's Encyclopedia).
Johnson's Universal Cyclopedia.
Published 1899, New York by D. Appleton and Company.
8 volumes. Each volume c. 900 pages. Text in English. Profusely illustrated throughout, including more than 50 hand colored engraved maps plus city plans and color plates which is essentially a world atlas bound within.
One of the great publishing achievements of the era, once considered essential to own by prominent and educated men of the day.
Period 1/2 leather bindings, slightly raised bands, gilt compartment decorations & title lettering, marbled edges and end papers.
Set is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Set is not new or in "new" condition.
Bindings gently rubbed and age worn, but still supple, set remains overall very attractive and much nicer than typical for large heavy leather books of this era.
Text block paper is gently toned, internally still well preserved, clean, tight, sound.
Still very attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this beautiful monumental antique set survives.
Book Measures c. 11 1/4" H x 8 1/4" W. x 20" along a shelf. Very heavy.
