2 folio volumes; 388, 404 pages. Text in English. Profusely illustrated throughout w/ almost 4,000 wood engraved images and 18 steel engraved plates on heavy paper.
Period 1/2 leather binding, raised gilt bands, marbled edges.
A monumental set packed with endless interesting wood engraved images covering a wide range of topics and eras. These range from ancient culture such as Egypt and pyramids, Pompeii, Greece, to modern scientific inventions and marvels, natural history, cultural images from around the world, wine making, glass blowing, wool manufacturing, it goes on and on. Endless areas are represented pictorially in a manner utterly unique to this era.
Set is physically old and shows signs of handling and time. Item is not new or in "new" condition.
Binding gently age worn, light scuffing, spot staining and scattered soiling, leather remains supple, gilt bright.
Text block paper is clean, some sheets well age toned, still fresh, internally well preserved, scattered age spotting, staining or soiling (never heavy or offensive), any further flaws of a minor type unworthy of specific mention. Overall a nice antiquarian set, much nicer than typical for large picture books of this era.
Overall an attractive set with nice shelf appearance: displays a pleasing and unique age patina , any age wear easy to overlook or forgive.
