The Life of William Ewart Gladstone, by John Morley.
Published 1903, New York by the MacMillan Company.
3 Volumes, each c. 650 pages. Frontis portraits protected by original tissue guards
Stamped bindings signed by W. Roach, NY.
Period 1/2 red leather bindings, raised and gilt bands, gilt title lettering, compartments gilt ruled in outline, top edges gilt, deckled edges.
Some scuffing, splitting and slight weakening to front joints and covers, but bindings remain clean, tight, and sound, covers still well and firmly attached. Some staining at corners and lower joints, small chipping to spine heads, mostly gentle signs of age, time and handling.
Interior clean, tight, square and sound. Paper gently uniformly age toned, largely free of any age spotting. Any age flaws are easy to overlook or forgive.
A fine and handsome set on the shelf, uncommon in nice period leather bindings like these.
