(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Decorative Book Bindings, Life Advice).
Lacon: or, Many Things in Few Words; Addressed to Those Who Think, by Rev. C.C. Colton.
Published 1836, New York by Charles Wells.
504 pages. Text in English.
[Life Philosophy; self-reflection; thoughts and contemplations on the meaning of life, how to think nobly].
Period publisher's full leather binding, smooth spine, compartments with intricate scrolled gilt decorations, covers have floral vine pattern within double gilt ruled, a running decorative blind stamp within the gilt; board edges gilt patterned, all edges gilt. Owners dated Dec. 25, 1866 (Christmas gift) name at top of title.
Book is physically quite old (over 180 years) and thus shows various (mostly small) signs of age, time and handling.
Binding gently age worn, small chip into leather at head of spine, leather is lightly rubbed but remains still rich in appearance, soft and supple, joints slightly scuffed.
Overall very attractive as a surviving publishers gift leather binding of the early 19th century, most of which are scarce today in fine condition. These types of deluxe decorative gilt bindings are uncommon due to their being the most expensive option for the book, thus with the fewest produced.
Text block paper is gently age toned but still clean and fresh, some minor small spots- overall well preserved, tight and sound.
Very attractive on the shelf. The book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition. Any age flaws are easy to overlook or forgive on this example.
Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this slightly age worn but still extremely pleasing antique book survives. Nicer in person than the perhaps harsh looking digital photos might indicate.
Book Measures c. 6" H x 3 3/4" W.
