(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Americana, Ethnography, Geography, Morse's American Gazetteer).

The American Gazetteer, Exhibiting a Full Account of the Civil Divisions, Rivers, Harbours, Indian Tribes &c. of the American Continent, Also of the West India and Other Appendant Islands, with a Particular Description of Louisiana, by Jedidiah Morse.
Published 1804, Boston by Thomas and Andrews.
c. 500 pages plus appendix. Text in English. Folding map of South America (only- five other maps lacking).

Offered primarily for the early imprint date relating to geography in America by the grandfather of the genre. The geographical information within is fascinating and reflects the early Republic era. Includes one of the earliest published descriptions of the newly acquired Louisiana Territory, discussed on over 16 pages.

Period full leather binding, smooth spine, gilt bands, gilt title lettering on contrasting red leather label.

Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time.

Binding heavily age worn but still appealing, leather and joints broken, leather scuffed and a bit dried, spine creases with chipping, remains overall attractive as an early 18th century hand made object.

Text block paper is age toned as typical, assorted levels of age spotting throughout. A book which has seen heavy use and browsing, but is rare in any condition.

Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this historically significant Americana book as it survives.

We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than it appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take clear photos and try to describe it clearly.

Book Measures c. 8 1/2" H x 5 1/2" W.
