A New System of Modern Geography: Or, a Geographical, Historical, and Commercial Grammar; and Present State of the Several Kingdoms of the World, by William Guthrie.
Published 1780, London for C. Dilly & G. Robinson.
795 pages. Text in English. Binder's instructions at rear. Contains a nice assortment of thirteen 18th century folding maps, however work is not complete. Great content relating to America as well as the rest of the world
Re: directions to binder leaf, book retains the following 7 engraved maps (with cartouches) and plates: The Sphere, Scotland, England, France with Netherlands, Italy, Turkey in Europe and Hungary, and Africa. Loosely laid in throughout the work are 7 other old engraved folding maps which include England and Wales, Suevia, Switzerland, North Africa (Byzacium), Numidia et Mauretania, Africa continent in outline and South America.
Likely late 19th century 1/2 leather binding, raised bands, gilt title lettering, embossed compartment decorations, marbled covers and end papers.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.
Binding gently age worn, leather rubbed but still supple, joints slightly scuffed, remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, internally still well preserved, tight, sound, couple text pages with small minor corners squares cut away in the wide blank margins.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
