(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Americana, Philadelphia, Centennial Exposition, Souvenir Album, Illustrated Guide Book).
The Centennial Exposition Guide.
Published 1876, Philadelphia by Hamlin & Lawrence.
30 pages plus wrappers. Text in English. Woodcut illustrated throughout. Large oblong folding woodcut map at front, rear cover large woodcut showing various nationalities and social levels from around the world in front of the Fair entry.
Rare guide book, the map at front being a German language variant with German letter typesetting key printed below an English lettered map. A small publisher whose works appear to all be rare, perhaps formed entirely for this single work(?). Not an "official" guide book, thus likely not sold on the Fair grounds, which could explain it's apparent rarity today.
Publisher's color coated elaborately designed paper covers.
This rare fair grounds guide booklet is 145 years old and shows various signs of handling and time, particularly the covers.
Covers creased, edge chipping and tears, poor eye appeal overall. Internally however luckily remains overall entirely fresh and mostly clean, just some small minor smudging or old spotting, original stich binding as issued, tight, sound, attractive with c.30 large well done pictorial woodcuts of many key buildings and sights.
Overall a unique age patina, given the scarcity the age flaws for us easy to overlook or forgive.
