(Old Books, Plutarch, History, Biography, Leather Book Bindings, American Publications).
Plutarch's Lives; Translated from the Original Greek with Notes, Critical and Historical and a Life of Plutarch, by John and William Langhorne.
A New Edition, carefully Revised and Corrected.
Published 1822, Baltimore by William and Joseph Neal. 746 pages.
Text in English. Engraved frontis portrait and half-title.
Period full leather binding, smooth spine, elaborate gilt bands, gilt compartments and title, cover gilt ruled in outline.
Front joint cracked through, front cover loose and semi-detached, now held only by binding cords. However, text block and book otherwise remains sound. Interior contents show moderate age spotting throughout, however still tight and square, mostly clean.
Book remains handsome on the shelf. It displays a noble age patina, covers scratched and rubbed, spine ends and joints chipped, binding shows clear signs of age and handling, however the age flaws relatively easy to overlook or forgive.
A scarce early American imprint on Plutarch and the ancient Greek authors.
