Portsmouth Herald New Hampshire Souvenir Wentworth 1898 Beer Breweries ShoesBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
(Old Newspapers, 19th Century Periodicals, Americana, New England, New Hampshire, Portsmouth).
The Portsmouth Herald.
Published March 15th, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
18 pages. Text in English. Profusely illustrated throughout with key sights and people of the area around this time, original staples as issued. Wentworth Hotel is the front page.
Profusely photo illustrated newspaper format. A huge oversized souvenir paper format, measuring 2 feet high and almost 20" wide before opening.
Condition is (as expected) fairly well age worn, some old creasing from being folded for storage, scattered edge tears, a couple rumpled edges, long old tape repair to front cover, nick into paper block at top edge, etc. Nothing horrible, just various defects from being repeatedly opened, closed, inspected and moved around.
This fragile souvenir item is physically old and shows clear signs of handling and time. It is not new or a modern reproduction, etc. Many of the pages strike us as being worthy of individual framing for display in a public space such as a restaurant or brewery, etc.
Paper used is better than typical newsprint of the era, so remains white and supple. Paper is gently age worn as expected for a large folded newspaper with no protective binding, small loss spots along the centerfold front page, etc.- still, it remains overall attractive. Rare in any condition due to the format and local nature.
Still attractive looking and a lot of fun to brose through! Many very interesting bw photos, including numerous of the local beer breweries Frank Jones and Eldredge, and the large shoe factory, beautiful houses, key sites, etc.
It displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this quite rare antique item survives.
