The Rhine From Its Source to the Sea, Trans. by G.C.T. Bartley.
Published 1899, Philadelphia by Henry T. Coates & Co.
303 pages. Text in English. Illustrated throughout with 49 gravure plates protected by lettered tissue guards, plus a large folding map on bond paper at rear of vol. 2. Very uncommon set to encounter in period leather bindings like this, potentially a special Publishers deluxe binding or done custom for an early owner.

Attractive antiquarian 1/2 leather binding, raised & gilt bands, gilt title lettering on contrasting leather labels, marbled covers & end papers

Set is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time.

Bindings gently age worn but still appealing, leather and joints slightly rubbed but still supple, thin crack to top of rear joint of vol. 2 but all covers very strongly and firmly attached as issued. spine title labels with slight scuffing or edge chipping, set remains overall very attractive as a 19th century object.

Text block paper is gently age toned as typical, internally set remains mostly clean, tight and sound. A book which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.

Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this nice pictorial travel set as it survives.

We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than it appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take many photos and try to describe it clearly.
