The Rhine: or, a Journey from Utrecht to Francfort Chiefly by the Borders of the Rhine, and the Passage Down the River from Mentz to Bonn: Described in a Series of Letters Written from Holland to a Friend in England in the Years 1791 and 1792, by T. Cogan.
Published 1794, London by G. Woodfall for J. Johnson.
2 volumes. 329, 394 pages. Text in English. Illustrated throughout with 22 aquatint plates (of 24; lacks 2 plates and the map).
Wonderful plate book with appealing prospect views of numerous key German cities. (Set is priced to start at $20/ aquatint view).
Period 1/2 leather bindings, smooth spines, gilt bands, gilt title lettering on contrasting black leather labels, marbled covers.
Set is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Set is not new or in "new" condition.
Bindings gently age worn, leather rubbed but still supple, joints slightly scuffed and cracked (holding firmly), remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, light to moderate scattered age spotting, internally still well preserved, tight, sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this fine 18th century view set survives.
Book Measures c. 8 1/2" H x 5 1/2" W.
