Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Rendered into English Quatrains by Edward Fitzgerald. [Standard Edition of the Five Versions].
Published 1898, Boston by L.C. Page and Company.
282 pages. Text in English. Frontis portrait protected by original tissue guard. Illustrated throughout with thirteen nicely printed plates with red lettered tissue guards facing each one.
A beautiful 19th century art nouveau inspired illustrated gift book.
The moody b&w art plates were all separately individually printed on heavy wove paper and later inserted at the bindery when the book was first bound up for issue.
Period 1/2 red morocco leather binding, slightly raised bands, beautiful art nouveau vegetation floral gilt compartment decorations, gilt title lettering, top edge gilt, marbled covers & end papers, deckled edges, all text printed on hand-made paper on one side only (recto), gravure plates with red lettered tissue guards. Clearly intended as a gift book production for a book or literary connoisseur.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.
Binding gently age worn but still well preserved and appealing. Leather ever so slightly rubbed but still supple, joints slightly scuffed, remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, internally still well preserved, tight, sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
