An actual piece of American history issued during the Reconstruction Era. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images, issued contemporary to the events plus many great ads.

Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper.  An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue.

During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era.

Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued.

Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display. 

Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W.

The key print in this issue is a fine double page centerfold on "Completion Of The Pacific Railroad - The Great Link Connecting Europe With Asia Across the American Continent", which is a great scene of the Transcontinental Railroad with vignettes around the edge. Another nice half page view is the "Interior of a Palace Hotel Car Used On the Pacific Railroad" Historic issue!

Also present is the full front page illustration: "The Lullaby," showing a mother and father rocking their child to sleep.

"Demolition of the New York City Hospital Grounds" article has includes a half page illustration. A 1/4 page illustration "The Corcoran Art Depository, Washington, D.C." has an accompanying article. "David A Wells" article features an illustration of him. "Columbia Market, Bethnal Green, London - the Quadrangle" is a 1/3 page illustration. A full page illustration is the "Burning of Steamers on the Ohio River at Cincinnati, May 12, 1869". The back page features a Jack Tar political cartoon.
