The Naval and Mail Steamers of the United States, by Charles B. Stuart.
Published 1853, New York by Charles B. Norton, Irving House. Lithographed plates by Sarony & Major, NY. 216 pages. Text in English.

Complete with 36 plates, including a wonderful color lithographed frontis of Steamer "Powhatan" by Sarony & Major, 6 color tinted plates, 9 plates depicting ships, numerous double page cross sectional diagrams relating to engineering and engines. Portrait of Charles Stuart, Civil Engineer and fine profile view of U.S. Mail Steamer "Arctic", both by W.L. Ormsby (bank note engraver).

Rebound in the past (perhaps mid-20th century?) in sturdy plain cloth binding, gilt title lettering, all edges gilt.

Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.

Binding gently age worn, remains overall sound and sturdy.

Text block paper is gently toned, light to moderate scattered age spotting throughout, internally still well preserved, tight, sound.

Contents display a pleasing and unique age patina and are in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this wonderful nautical plate book relating to steamships survives. A very nice mid-19th century book, fairly rare on the market in any condition.

Book Measures c. 13 3/8" H x 10 1/2" W.
