Cloth soft cover binding, gilt stamped title to front cover. Complete with five folding b&w maps (all with advertising on them) plus a large folding lithographed world map (dated 1871) with full original hand color. Profusion of line engraved western images, including numerous full page views.
The 5 folding b&w maps include a long pictorial strip map of the RR route across the entire country embellished with a globe, western horse scene and tall mast ships approaching San Francisco Bay, terminating at Lake Michigan and Chicago region.
Early city plan of Omaha, Nebraska & Council Bluffs along the Missouri River, including three Union Pacific RR president portraits.
Detailed early city plan map of Salt Lake City, Utah shows in detail the U.S. Military Camp Douglas Reservation. A three column key across bottom identifies approx. 20 specific buildings and residences, including a Hotel, Daily Herald newspaper, Brigham Young's residence & Office, etc.
Small folding map of Yellowstone National Park is dated 1871 under direction of F.V. Hayden and has an advert. for watches down the right side.
Large world map displays vivid period hand color and has bold oceanic travel line routes overprinted. Numerous notes seen around the map describing key features or dates. Left lower margin trimmed at or slightly into neatline. Long tear beside horizontal fold line well repaired with old paper and now scarcely visible (in fact, it's close to invisible). evidence of pin holes in panels due to long pin being used through map long ago when it was all folded up (these are mostly easy to miss visually).
Book remains sound and tight, paper toned, evidence of mostly light old damp staining to some page corners.
