White Mountains New Hampshire 1878 rare Bierstadt 3-D Stereoscopic Album book
Brian DiMambro(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Americana, United States, New England, New Hampshire, White Mountains, Travel, Tourism, Souvenir Album, Illustrated Books).
Gems of American Scenery. Consisting of Stereoscopic Views Among the White Mountains with Descriptive Text.
Published 1878, New York by Harroun & Bierstadt.
98 pages, with 23 (of 24) Albertype (photographic) stereoviews. Text in English. First and only printing of this great 19th century 3-D item.
Publisher's cloth binding, gilt title lettering, embossed cover decorations, 3-D viewer affixed to and part of cover as issued.
A defective example of a rare and desirable item. Lacks the endpapers, map and one stereoview (final view of Center Harbor), three of the views with adhesions from facing page (could be remedied with some careful amateur effort since the adhesion is onto the views, not the reverse- we show all three).
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition. Priced according to condition, if without the flaws it would be priced more than double our asking price.
Binding rubbed and age worn but nothing severe or unsightly, cloth slightly frayed at spine ends and tips of boards, book remains overall attractive as an object.
Paper is gently toned, scattered small minor soiling, small early date notations at top of some text pages (likely refers to date the early owner visited the sight), mostly still clean, tight, sound internally aside from as mentioned above.
Still attractive on the shelf. The book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in overall nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws which may be present seem easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail showing how this book survives. The asking price reflects the condition based on our examination and 35+ years full time exposure to antiquarian books, maps and printed ephemera of all types and genres. Flaws seen and/ or described have been taken into account.
Book Measures c. 8" H x 5 1/2" W.
