Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization.

Issued December 3rd, 1864, New York, by Harper & Brothers. Nice full page Homer wood engraving of Army soldiers on Thanksgiving.

An actual piece of American history issued during the Civil War. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images relating to that war and issued contemporary to the events.

Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper.  An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue.

During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era.

Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued.

Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display. 

Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W.

The front page has: 'The Rebel Flag of Truce Boat 'Beauregard' with Savannah in the Distance" & "The Rebel Flag of Truce Boats Coming down the Savannah River". Nice full pg. prints include 2 scenes of: "Our Blockading Fleet Off Wilmington, N.C." and three views of: "In & Around Martinsburg, Virginia". A nearly half pg: "Capture of the Blockade Runner 'Annie' " and a one-quarter pg: "Great Tunnel Under Pittsburg, Penna." Also a print of: "The Late Mr. John Leech".

A nice feature of this issue is a terrific & very displayable double page centerfold by famous artist Thomas Nast: "Thanksgiving Day, 1864 -- United We Stand'" which shows Lincoln & several war scenes. Also a prime feature is a full page Winslow Homer print: 'Thanksgiving Day in the Army--The Wish Bone'.

The back page has 2 cartoons: "Uncle Sam's New Butler" and "Bellycose Appearance of Our Brave Boys After Thanksgiving."
