The Art of the World: Illustrated in the Paintings, Statuary, and Architecture of the World's Columbian Exposition, ed. by Ripley Hitchcock.
Published 1895, New York by D. Appleton and Company.
2 volumes. Each c. 300 pages. Text in English. Profusely illustrated throughout with color plates, engravings, and various other plates and images. Many of the "water color" plates are set within paper mats as issued.
A huge elephant folio set, monumental, heavy. Remarkable condition, fresh, clean, really lovely. Set is scarce/ rare thus.
Period 1/2 leather bindings, slightly raised bands, embossed spine decorations, gilt title lettering, gilt pictorial cover design, all edges gilt, marbled end papers.
Set is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Set is not new or in "new" condition.
Bindings gently age worn, yet leather is supple, gilt is bright, covers display only minimal rubbing or scuffing, much nicer than typical.
Text block paper is clean, internally well preserved, little staining or soiling, any flaws of a minor type unworthy of specific mention.
Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this antique set survives.
